Body & Energy

T'ai Chi/Qigong

My Background

T'ai Chi & Qigong
T'ai Chi is a system of slow, gentle movements that work all the major muscle groups and joints. It is also a form of 'moving meditation,' which integrates body and mind and can improve mental functions and enhance health.

The controlled movements of t'ai chi balance the body's internal energy, which connects body and mind. It also increases the circulation of blood and energy in the body, producing a state of relaxation and calm.

Qigong (pronounced "chee-gung") literally means 'developing or cultivating your life force energy.' There are many forms of qigong, from simple breathing exercises to more distinct physical exercises, including t'ai chi.

I teach weekly t'ai chi and qigong classes in Coupeville and Freeland for adult students of all ages, even into their 90s. T'ai chi has been shown to be a tremendous benefit especially for seniors, reducing by 47% the number of falls and significantly reducing injuries from falls that did occur.

Some of the beneifts of t'ai chi and qigong include:

• Better balance
• Reduced stress
• Toned muscles
• Lower blood pressure
• Improved coordination
• Increased flexibility
• Greater self-awareness
• Improved mental function
• Better general health
• Improved posture
• Increased peace of mind

"T'ai chi has given me self-confidence in my physical abilities that is even more important than the health benefits I've derived. And we have a lot of fun!"
--MKB, Barrington

"It's a wonderful form of relaxation and keeps a nonagenarian supple."
--SW, age 94

Class Schedule
I am currently teaching two weekly t'ai chi classes on Whidbey Island.

On Mondays my class meets at 10:30 a.m. at Tiger Martial Arts in Freeland. On Wednesday we meet at 10:30 a.m. in Coupeville at Madrona Massage.

Both classes begin with qigong exercises, then we move on to work on the t'ai chi form we're learning. The classes are appropriate for anyone, from beginners on, especially older adults who would like to begin an exercise program or improve their balance, flexibility or strength.

Corporate Workshops & Classes
A little stress can be a good thing, providing an incentive to change. But too much can cause physical, mental and emotional problems. I offer stress reduction workshops from an hour to a day for companies that want to improve their employees' health and reduce their health insurance and worker compensation costs. Happier and healthier people translate to a better bottom line for everyone.

I teach a combination of techniques, including meditation, movement and self-applied acupressure to give people the tools they need to manage and reduce their stress. My workshops are ideal for lunch-hour brown bags or day-long offsites and can be customized to any company's needs.

Private Lessons
I offer private and semi-private classes in both t'ai chi and qigong in your home or office. Qigong exercises are a wonderful way to re-energize and rejuvenate during your workday and can help eliminate or reduce problems from repetitive stress or excessive sitting.
